Organic foods are those foods that are produced in the most natural way possible. To earn the privilege of selling under the label of organic, growers and manufacturers are required to be certified and to prove that their foods are grown or manufactured without the use of chemical pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

When it comes to foods that are made up of a variety of ingredients, they can only have the label of organic if the majority of the ingredients in the product are organic. The minimum percentage of organic ingredients does vary among differing governments, however the general standard is usually that at minimum ninety percent of ingredients or above are organic.

When it comes to organic meats and dairy, organic produce is that food which comes from organic animals; animals that have not been injected with artificial hormones such as growth hormone and animals that have not been pumped with those antibiotics that many non-organic meats are subjected to.

Organic food is healthy food. Most people that look for organic foods to buy are people that eat mainly whole foods; whole foods as opposed to processed foods. Processed foods last a lot longer than whole foods do but they almost always require preservatives. More often than not, manufacturers will choose to use chemical preservatives. Therefore, it goes without saying that organic foods and whole foods are healthier than processed food. Whole foods are foods that are in, or very close to, their natural state; foods like fruits and vegetables.

Health enthusiasts worry about the build up of chemicals in our bodies due to years of consuming residual chemicals in the food we eat. This happens due to the way in which the food is treated with chemicals when it is grown or manufactured. Many people relate sickness like cancer and neurological ailments as being the result of too much exposure or consumption of residual pesticides and the chemicals in our food.

In most western countries, government regulators approve or disapprove the certification of foods as organic. Those companies that use the certified organic label are held to very strict regulations. Manufacturers are required to be diligent about not allowing the contamination or mixing of organic food with any non-organic foods that they may also produce. Food that is organic needs to be separated throughout the complete growth/development cycle from food that is not organic.

Over the years, as people have become more and more conscientious about what they eat, organic food has become more in demand and more popular. Even just a decade ago, organic food in the every day supermarket was a rare sight. These days, not only do grocery stores have complete organic sections, there are also complete chains of supermarkets that offer nothing but organic foods and produce. It is clear that the consumer is making a u-turn and choosing to return to eating food it in its most natural and most healthy state.
